Music Next Utrecht – AI & Music Industry Conference

It was great to moderate at Music Next in Utrecht in December, such a key conference on AI and the Music Industry, which sold out very quickly.

The sessions I hosted were on Ethical Dilemmas in the AI era, Fair Attribution of AI Revenues, and one with Cherie Hu, with a Q & A after her fantastic keynote. A very positive and insightful way to end my 2025 conference season.

Many thanks to Cherie (Water & Music), and to the Ethical Dilemmas speakers, innovators Femke Blok, (Effenaar, Thunderboom, Music Tech Netherlands), Martin Clancy (AI:OK), Marcel A. Velez Vasquez (University of Amsterdam, AI Song Contest), and artist and music tech creator Hans Eijkenaar.

Good to see open source and new tools feature, plus discussion of bias in AI, where important new research is emerging.

Hans also premiered his AI composed jazz fusion set live, with his AI Collective, after the session to great acclaim.

A rousing discussion on Fair Attribution was had with Maarten Walraven (MUSIC x, Utrecht University, Symphony Media), Florian von Hoyer (Allrights AIxchange), John Ashley Burgoyne (University of Amsterdam), and James Frostick (BumaStemra), there’s so much going on in that world, including a new BumaStemra pilot project. Thanks to all of those panellists too.

Plus thanks to the BumaStemra team especially Jessica van Loon, Sena (the neighbouring rights organisation) and NVPI Muziek for inviting me along to host.
